Housing that is reasonably priced and affordable for individuals or families with low to moderate incomes is referred to as affordable housing. Affordable housing is defined as housing that is affordable to those with household incomes at or below the median as determined by a recognized housing affordability index administered by the federal government or a local government. Most affordable housing literature refers to mortgages and a variety of forms that exist along a continuum ranging from emergency homeless shelters to transitional housing, non-market rental (also known as social or subsidized housing), formal and informal rental, indigenous housing, and ending with affordable home ownership.
