The genetically modified tree is a tree whose DNA may be modified using ancestral engineering techniques. In most cases the aim is usually to introduce a novel trait towards the plant which won’t occur naturally in the species. Examples include resistance to certain pests, diseases, ecological conditions, and herbicide tolerance, or the modification of lignin levels as a way to reduce pulping costs.
