Regarding 300 BCE Theophrastus wrote several plant treatises, only two of which survive, Enquiry in Plants, and On what may cause Plants. He developed concepts of grow morphology and group, which did not necessarily withstand the scientific scrutiny in the Renaissance. Plant anatomy or phytotomy is the general term for that study of the inner structure of plants.
