Coal gasification is the process of generating syngas–a mixture consisting primarily of methane as well as monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor–from coal and water, air and/or oxygen. Over time, coal was gasified utilizing early technology to generate coal gas (also often known as “town gas”), the combustible gas traditionally used for municipal lighting and heating ahead of the advent of industrial-scale production of gas.
