Tephrochronology

Tephrochronology is usually a geochronological technique of which uses discrete tiers of tephra—volcanic ash at a single eruption—to build a chronological framework through which paleoenvironmental or archaeological records can be placed. The premise with the technique is that every volcanic event produces ash with a unique chemical “fingerprint” that allows the deposit to get identified across areas affected by fallout.
