It is normally a linking verb showing existence or the condition of the subject. It can also be used as an auxiliary verb when forming the passive voice. The verb be is used in the following patterns: with a noun: My mother is a teacher; Bill Clinton was the president of the US. With an adjective: This soup is very tasty; The children were good.
