Before a court can exercise power over a party, the constitution requires that this party have a number of minimum contacts using the forum in which the court sits. Personal jurisdiction is a court’s jurisdiction in the parties to case, as opposed to subject-matter jurisdiction, which is jurisdiction in the law and facts involved in the suit.
