The Cow

The cow is the most common domestic animal. She is the most useful of all domestic animals. It gives us a very healthy and nutritious food called milk.

The cow is four-footed. Her body is large. She has a long head, two eyes, two ears, two horns, and a long tail with a tuft of hair at the end of it. Her body is covered with soft and short fur. She has only one set of teeth in her lower Jaw. Her hoofs are divided into two parts. She has a pair of horns and long tail eves are big and beautiful. Her back is long and wide.

Cows are different in size and color. Some are white, some are black, some are red, some are grey and sonic are of mixed color. The body is covered with short hair. The male of a cow is called a bull or an ox.

Cows are found all over the world. The cows of Sind, Multan, England, America, New Zealand, Australia, and Holland are famous. A good number of cows are also found everywhere in Bangladesh. Universally, there are two types of cow breeds: Taurine and Zebu. Taurine cattle were developed in the Fertile Crescent region while Zebu type was domesticated.

The cow lives mainly on grass. She also eats straw, bran, oil-cakes, leaves of trees, creepers and herbs vegetables. Generally, she is used to of grazing green grasses in the fields. She chews her food very well in the mouth and then swallows. The cow is very mild and gentle by nature. She gives birth to one calf at a time. She gives birth to a small calf after 12 months. She has a deep love for her calf. Her calf drinks her milk for some months and starts eating food like her.

The cow is useful in many ways. She gives us milk. Her milk is sweet and nourishing. Butter, ghee, curd, cheese and various kinds of sweets are prepared from cow’s milk. Its milk can be changed in many forms such as curd, butter, whey, Gee, etc. Bullocks draw cart and ploughs. Cow dung is good manure and fuel, which is generally used in cultivated fields for better growth of crops. Buttons and combs are made of her horns and bones. Shoes, bags are made of her skin. After the death of a cow, her skin is used for making shoes, bags and other leather items. Muslims like eating her flesh which is known as beef. It is a domestic and also religious animal. In India, it is ritual and norm to worship Cow. The cow is our most silent and selfless friend. She is regarded as one of the family members.  She lives for us only. We should give her good quality food to eat. So, we must take care of her all the time.
