Columnar Phase

Columnar liquid crystals are grouped by their structural order plus the ways of packing of the columns. The columnar phase is a class of mesophases where molecules assemble into cylindrical structures to act as mesogens. Originally, these kinds of liquefied crystals were called discotic liquid crystals considering that the columnar structures are consists of flat-shaped discotic molecules piled one-dimensionally.
